Marr boss Ross in rugby thriller
Marr 15 Ross High 14
Marr took their first steps in the secondary shield competition on Saturday when they entertained Ross High.
Ross High who ply their trade in the league below Marr after being relegated last season, but currently sit top of their league and look likely to gain promotion at the end of this season.
The game had to be moved to the Marr College playing fields as the resent bad weather had left the pitches at Fullarton unplayable. Marr were again missing a couple of key players and again started with three under 18 in their starting 15 and one on the bench.
Marr started confidently and it was not long before they scored, centre and Captain Shaun Little made and outside break and then popped the ball to his centre partner Andrew Gault who scored between the posts. The conversion was added to give me a 7-0 lead. Ross High claimed the only other score of the half and the conversion was added to take the half time score to 7-7.
Marr turned round and it was not long before they fell behind to a try and conversion to take the score to 7-14.
Ross High kept Marr at bay until the last 15 minutes when Andrew Watson in his own twenty-two ran nearly the length of the pitch evading the opposition before he was brought down a yard short of the line, he did however manage offload the ball to Robbie Lockie who touched down to take the score to 12-14.
Marr then regained the lead with just five minutes left when they were awarded a penalty and Douglas Steele coolly stepped up and slotted the conversion to take the score to 15-14. Marr then managed to hold out for the last five minutes to claim victory by the narrowest of margins and so continue to the next round of the Shield.
The second 15 had a rearranged league fixture against Cumbernauld. Marr struggled all day and Cumbernauld ran out 7-27 winners. Marr"s only try coming from second row Chris Myers who shook off five of six Cumbernauld defenders to score. Steven Galloway added the conversion.
Marr"s stand in hooker Mark Underwood had a good game despite not having played the position before and a freshly shorn Kris Kirk had another good day in the line out in difficult conditions. There are no games next week due to the six nations but training continues on Monday night at Marr College.
