TALENTED striker Scott McLean is hoping to head for the football big time after bagging the winning goal for Troon in what could be his farewell appearance.

He scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 2-1 triumph against Maryhill in the Super First Division on Saturday.

Former Kilmarnock player McLean, who hails from Ayr, has trials lined up on both sides of the border in the next couple of weeks and hopes to get an offer.

He said: "I arranged to got to Livingston on Monday and Tuesday and I will see if they want me back or not and then I go to Cardiff on Wednesday for 12 days, get a couple of games under my belt and see they will make a decision on whether I get offered a contract or not. Everyone's aspiration is to play down south and it would do be a good opportunity to showcase myself at a big club."

He was delighted with the result and said: "It wasn't a great game but we played well and battled through the fame. We got the three points and that's all that matters."

Boss Jim Kirkwood was heartened with the display and said: "Maryhill were hard to beat but we got through it and the quality showed in the end. We had to get on the front foot, not to let a mistake happen and get ourselves in the lead and we did that. Apart from the last couple of minutes we totally controlled the game."

The boss is impressed with his side and said: "This is a totally new team, people forget that."

Of McLean he added: "Its good that you play for Troon and then you have a chance for a trial at Cardiff City or Livingston and that's what Young players need to know.

Troon on Saturday host leaders Petershill in what will be the biggest game of the season so far and the boss commented: "This is a massive match as Petershill are the best time we have played and we will have to be a bit more up and at then and ready for them. It's a home game and we need to win. If we can beat them that's four points out of six against them this season. Hopefully people will turn up in good numbers on Saturday as it's such a huge game."

Meanwhile the Seasiders last week completed the signing of striker Danny McKay from Irvine Meadow.

The new boy came off the bench midway through the second half on Saturday.

Assistant boss Matt Maley said: "It's great to have Danny on board as he has experience at junior, amateur and senior level."
