Scottish Junior Cup First Round

TROON 1

RENFREW 1

By Matt Speirs

IN the end a draw was a fair result in a match that never reached the heights expected from two of the top sides in the Super First Division.

Troon booked the breeze in the first half and made early in roads into the Renfrew half and in seven minutes a Ross Barbour cross found Mark Curragh, but his header was diverted for a corner.

Three minutes later Steven McCreadie was the provider and this time Mark Curragh's header was saved by Daniel McLeay.

McLeay came to Renfrew's rescue again in 17 minutes, turning a drive from Jack Paterson away for a corner.

A goal had to come and it arrived in 35 minutes. Curragh chased the ball to the goal-line and crossed low across goal to Tony Murphy who knocked the ball into the net.

The second half belonged on the whole to 'Frew and it was no surprise when they drew level in 53 minutes when a corner-kick was swung in and Kieran Healy had a free header into the net.

Play became scrappy after this with interruptions for fouls and substitutions not allowing the match to flow.

Late in the half Troon came more into the game and a Scott McLean cross found substitute Graeme Barbour, but he headed over the bar.

Troon almost won the tie in the last minute when a scramble in the box saw the ball fall to substitute Ross McCrea but his shot was diverted wide.

So it's on to Western Park for the replay on Saturday.

TROON: McGowan, R. Barbour, Brown, Keenan, Chisholm, Lamont, McCreadie, Murphy, Curragh, McLean, Paterson. Subs: G Barbour, Chatham, Fulton, Vance, McCrea.
