A HOTSHOT Amateur football striker is hoping to earn his first cap for Scotland after being called up for a special weekend match.

Michael O'Connor (28) of Prestwick team Glenburn Miners Welfare has been invited to play in the Scottish Amateur FA International Select Scottish Trial match at Dalziel Park, Motherwell on Sunday.

The invitation comes on the back of a fine run of form from the striker, who has scored 26 goals for the Ayrshire amateur Premier Division leaders.

Former Troon FC and Whitletts Victoria striker Michael is looking forward to the challenge and told Sportscene: "It's an honour to be called up for the trial match but a lot of the credit has to go go the team as we have been playing really well. Hopefully if I play well I will be selected for the full Amateur Scotland squad as we have important games coming up in including the Home Internationals. I am really enjoying playing Amateur Football."

Meanwhile O'Connor is hoping his side can maintain their challenge for the title as they host third-placed Shortlees on Saturday.

He said: "It's an important game for us and we are hoping to take three points. The aim must be to win the league and hopefully we can do that."
