THE acclaimed pie championed by Ayr United superfan Somerset Boab has taken one of the top prizes in competition for the Best Football Pie in Scotland. Following the busiest judging day ever with 543 products judged across 10 product categories by 50 expert judges, the organisers of the World Scotch Pie Championship has announced the winners of the best Football Pie in Scotland and Ayr United secured third place for their Steak and Boab Ale Pie baked by Browning’s who also won the coveted Best Pie in Scottish Football for the Killie pie sold at Kilmarnock FC’s grounds.

The category for the best pie available for supporters to buy at a Scottish football match was introduced last year in recognition of the huge importance these hearty snacks play in the fans enjoyment of the beautiful game. The Forres Mechanics’ Steak Pie took top slot for Murdoch’s Butchers last year but this time Brownings has come out top with the first and third slots.

“I am delighted,” said John Gall of Brownings The Aye united Steak and Ale Boab pie has become synonymous on match day with quality and taste so to have it judged one of the best in the land is a real result.” Somerset Boab, aka Richard Merry, was delighted.

He said: “Wow, for our club pie to be recognised as one of the best in Scottish Football is a huge honour and I have spoken to Brownings about the possibility of selling it in shops as well as at Somerset Park.” Richard dedicates himself to raising funds for the club and Browning’s were only too happy to help create a pie donating 10p per pie bought at the grounds to the cause.

Meanwhile Boab is delighted to report that 95 of his CDS, featuring musical tributes to players including Michael Donald and Michael McGowan. have now been sold, raising a whopping £475 for the Ayr United Players’ Fund.

He said: “I am planning to make more copies of the CDs, after the initial rush they are now being sold in dribs and drabs but the more we sell the more we can help the Players Fund.”
