BUOYANT Ayr United boss Ian McCall was impressed with his team's performance as they hammered Arbroath 4-1 in the William Hill Scottish Cup.

The victory sets up a potential home fifth round (last 16) clash with McCall's former club Rangers at Somerset Park, a prospect which excites the manger.

And what was a memorable weekend was made even better by the news that derby rivals Stranraer stunned leaders Raith Rovers, defeating them 1-0 which leaves Ayr just a point behind them, having played one game more.

McCall said: "We played well and -31 flattered us but it's a cup tie and all that matters is getting into the next round. All respect to Fraserburgh but you would expect Rangers to come through tie and the ground would be absolutely packed for that game, there would be a good atmosphere. It was a great weekend to be an Ayr fan, what the cup result and the Stranraer win.

But the United manager is putting any thoughts of the Scottish Cup on hold as they prepare to make the short trip to Hampden Park for a clash with a Queen's Park side they have already defeated twice this season as they continue their challenge for the League One title.

They have been boosted with the news that Andy Geggan (calf injury), who has played just once or twice in the last eight weeks, is in line for a return to the squad. It's not certain he will start but it could be on the bench. Five other players remain sidelined.

McCall is looking forward to the game and said: "The previous results against Queen's Park don't count for anything. But look forward to the game and have been going well.

Meanwhile striker Alan Forrest, who has returned to the side in recent weeks and has been seen as a key player, was encouraged with the display in what was an end-to-end game against Arbroath."

He said: Arbroath did but well but we deserved our victory and had a few more chances and took them at the right times. We had a few injuries but we have the squad to deal with that just now, we are doing well and hopefully pick up more results. We want to progress as far as we can in the cup. Hopefully we will just keep it going.

"I have had a good run of games although could have done better with a few opportunities. The pitch was good although the ball did bauble a bit."

The Rangers or Fraserburgh tie will be played on February 10 or 11 but the date will not be known until the tie is concluded. After the weekend postponement, it is now re-scheduled for Wednesday, January 31.
