Tennent's National League One

MARR RUGBY 38

GHA RFC 12

PROMOTION-chasing Marr considerably boosted their hopes with am emphatic win in front of a bumper crowd at Fullarton.

The hosts delivered a solid performance. More often than not they managed to come away with points from good attacking positions. This helped build up a reasonable lead against an always threatening GHA whose lively back line had to be well marshalled by Marr’s defence.

GHA opened the scoring after five minutes when Ben Addison danced his way through Marr’s defence to land a try. Marr quickly replied with some power play from the forwards being rewarded with tries from Mackenzie Pearce and Calvin Henderson. Marr continued to dominate as the match entered the second quarter with Gregor Paxton adding try three as he finished off a great attacking break started by Richard Dalgleish. GHA continued to battle and defend vigorously. They clawed back a converted try to end the half just two scores adrift (21-12). In the second half Marr turned up the pressure. GHA put up a stiff defence against repeated attacks, but finally the breakthrough came with two further scores for Marr.

Marr full-back Liam McLoughlin had a perfect kicking day with five from five conversions before adding icing to his day when he closed the match in the final play, landing a 35m drop kick.

The result saw Marr leapfrog GHA into second place with leaders Jed-Forest holding a two-point advantage.

MELROSE STORM 19

THE biggest cheer of the day was for the 2s as they secured their first win in National Reserve League 1 and did so in style, playing against the current title holders.

It’s been a turbulent introduction for Marr in this higher and more competitive league where they often are playing against Premiership club’s 1st XV players. This win will hopefully provide the platform from where the 2s can now kick on knowing that they can survive and compete at this level.

Marr Rugby’s 3rd XV match away against west of Scotland was postponed as no referee was available. It will be rescheduled.
