MAYBOLE 1

ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS 1

SPIRITED Maybole battled back from behind to secure a point against one of the pre-season promotion favourites.

The home side have a good home record against their weekend opponents are were looking to frustrate them again.

Winton made the best possible start when in the opening minute Lee Davidson played a cross in from the right to the near post where Davie Cunningham headed down and just between the diving former Ardeer Thistle keeper Paul McCann and the near post to put them ahead.

Three minutes later Jamie McKenna controlled a long throw from Marc Davidson in the box, turned and shot but his effort went into the side netting. In six minutes a shot from Davie Cunningham following a good Winton move down the right deflected off a defender and out to Sean Mears just inside the box but his shot went wide.

The home side's first real attack saw Calum McDade run down the right, but his cross was cleared by Graham Longair in seven minutes. Maybole were gradually working their way into the game and in 14 minutes a dangerous ball from the left into the box aimed at McDade was cleared by Lee Davidson.

In 27 minutes later another good move involving Davie Cunningham, Lee Davidson and Sean Mears saw the ball played to Jamie McKenna in the box, who turned and shot but the ball went wide. Eight minutes later, McKenna ran on to a ball and beat a defender but he pulled his shot wide. Sean Mears then cut in from the right and into the box in 37 minutes but his shot was comfortably saved by McCann. Maybole had another opportunity when a defensive clearance deflected to Chris Allan in the box but he shot across the goal and out the other side in 40 minutes.

Two minutes after the break, Rovers failed to clear the ball properly and former Winton striker Greig Mitchell brought out great save from Chris Lamb. A minute later Mitchell had another shot saved by the keeper following some good play by Jai Holland. In 50 minutes, David "Harpo" Smith sliced a cross into the goalmouth where Sean Mears headed to Cunningham but he shot wide. In 53 minutes a great cross from Sean Mears just missed by Jamie McKenna and the ball went through to McCann.

Winton were dealt a blow in 62 minutes when goalie Chris Lamb, who had needed treatment earlier, was unable to continue. Fortunately Scott Watson was on the bench and replaced him. Two minutes later Rovers won a corner when a David Smith cross was put out for a corner. From this David Cunningham headed the ball down, forcing a great save from McCann and although Winton kept possession and got the ball to David Smith his shot was well off target and the danger was cleared. In 70 minutes Rovers won a free- kick for handball 30 yards out but Michael Lennox’s shot went straight through to McCann who saved comfortably.

Winton paid the price for not taking their chances in 72 minutes when Cunningham fouled a home player out on the left wing and the referee played advantage. This allowed Maybole to play the ball to Chris Allan who the visitors thought was a couple of yards offside on the edge of the box and he ran on and slipped the ball past Watson from 15 yards to level.

Some good play from Rovers three minutes later saw them have another two good chances to take the lead. In 82 minutes saw a corner on the right was played to Fraser McMillan 30 yards out but he shot well over the bar. Then in 89 minutes, Greig Mitchell ran at the defence but shot wide.
