SCHOOLBOY Sean Addie is celebrating becoming one of the youngest ever winners of Ayr Golf Week's flagship event.

The 16-year-old Belmont Academy S6 pupil, who lives in Prestwick, lifted the Tam O'Shanter Trophy amidst glorious sunshine over his home course on Sunday.

He defeated good friend and clubmate Aidan Long 4&3 in a keenly contested final.

Jubilant Sean, playing in the event for a third time said: "It's a great feeling to win it. The previous twice I played I have not even qualified for the matchplay.

"I started with four birdies but was only 2 up through the first four holes. But until the turn I played a bit better and I was 6 up through 12, He won 13 and 14 and we halved 15 which gave me the win.

"The course was bouncy and firm and the greens this year weren't bad for this time of year. They held up well. I'm delighted to win such a prestigious event and it's my best victory so far. I practised really hard for the whole season and since Tuesday I putted out of my skin. I will be playing in the Scottish Boys Championships at Moray in July. My coach Gareth Hardy has helped me loads, especially with my putting."

Another 16-year-old celebrated success in the top handicap event, the Handyside Cup.

John Kelly of Seafield defeated Belleisle opponent Craig Fulton 2 up in the final.

The Kyle Academy S6 pupil said: "This is probably the biggest thing I have won. But I feel I can play a lot better and I shot a few rounds last week which would have done well in the Tam O'Shanter. I've had tips from Lee Hughes, the assistant pro at Belleisle. My aim is to bet into the Tam O'Shanter next year."

Prestwick St Cuthbert ace Jennifer Hill clinched the top women's event, the RC Brown with a 74 last Tuesday.

She said: "I played this in torrential rain last year and wanted to come back. It's been fabulous. I won the Ayrshire Ladies title here 10 or 15 years ago and have always wanted to come back. This is the first time I've won outside my own club."

Celebrating glory in the Ayr Advertiser Stableford Trophy with 39 points on Saturday was Troon St Meddan's ace.

The Barassie man said: "It was great to win it and played well. But I've got to enter it as my wife, Yvonne runs it. I played last year but the conditions have been so much better this time."
