PETERSHILL 0

WHITLETTS VICTORIA 0 (Whitletts win 4-2 on penalties)

VALIANT VIcs won their first penalty shoot out for 27 years as they caused a sensation by knocking Super Premier Division cracks Peasy tumbling out of the West of Scotland Cup at Petershill Park.

In only the second ever competitive meeting between the clubs, both sides served up an entertaining 90 minutes.

It was Vics' first penalty shoot win since they defeated Annbank 5-3 in the final of the Kyle & Carrick Cup back in April 1990.

Both sides had chances to win but the undefeated Superleague First Division leaders were first to threaten as Jason Hardie was released through on goal but Stevie Douglas was quickly off his line to deny the Peasie striker.

Vics' response was swift as Graeme Barbour couldn’t get enough on a Jordan Boyd cross to direct it goalward in front of goal. Both sides continued to press but defences were well on top but in 35 minutes new signing Craig Fisher brought a fine save out of Petershill keeper Dean Trainor who tipped the midfielders’ effort over the crossbar.

Right on half-time the Vics goal that survived a scare as Hardie cut inside two defenders and seemed set to score but his close range effort was blocked and cleared by Sean Ewart.

Ten minutes into the second period Douglas pulled off an outstanding save to deny Hardie and moments later former Irvine Meadow man Chris Hall should have done better for the hosts as he found the space inside the box to get away a shot on more than one occasion but elected to try and beat the entire Vics defence before being crowded out by Ewart.

Petershill had the better of the exchanges in the second period but rarely troubled a well marshalled Vics defence as the visitors continue to pose a threat on the counter attack. In one such attack Vics won a free kick 25 yards out from goal and Mbanje Munyaradzi brought the best out of Trainor, who pushed the ball round the post.

In the dying moments of the game Douglas saved a Liam Finnigan header on the line and Hall curled his shot over the bar.

The in the penalty shoot out Douglas was the Vics’ hero as he dived full stretch to his left to save Finnigan’s spot kick, while Peasie sub Gary Hynes put his spot kick wide to give Vics a strong advantage and although Chris Wilson and Hall both scored, four well taken spot kicks from Issac Kerr, Graeme Barbour, Marty Lawrie and Sean Ewart won the day for Vics.

Victory broke a run of 15 successive penalty shootout defeats for the Dam Park club.
