A SMASH hit event in South Ayrshire was well supported.

Some 50 P4-P7 pupils from across South Ayrshire participated in an Active Schools Badminton Tournament at Prestwick Tennis and Fitness Centre earlier this month.

The P4 and P5 pupils competed in the morning with P6 and 7 pupils in action during the afternoon.

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of pupils competing in badminton tournaments run by Active Schools since the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and it is evident that the games has inspired many children to compete in sports they may not have tried before.

The P4/5 girls tournament was won by Abby Paterson of Doonfoot Primary School with Max McCabe of Kingcase Primary School victorious in the boys event.

In the afternoon the P6/7 boys competition was won by Chloe Paterson of Doonfoot Primary winning the girls and Harrison Cran from Monkton Primary triumphant in the boys event.

Organisers were encouraged to see so many people taking part and supporting each other and they say well done to everyone who competed on the day.
