A TEENAGE Troon golfer with a driving ambition to make it to the top was Scotland's standout performer in an event held next week.

Cameron Johnstone (14), a Fourth Year pupil at Marr College, was in the Scotland squad who took on England in the Schoolboys Golf International, played over the Darley course in Troon.

He qualified for the event in June, finished 10th at an event at Murrayshall.

The Troon Welbeck recruit was the only Scot to win a singles match over his home course, defeating Englishman Ben Partridge 4&3.

England won the event 14-4.

The youngster said: "It was an honour to represent my country and I enjoyed the experience."

Cameron's dad Andy said: "Ben Partridge, who is in the English Golf Union U16 squad and is just back from Italy and was also in Florida where out of 120 boys he came third.

"He won the Junior Club Championship at Welbeck this year and last year he played at Under-16 level when he was only U13. The national coach Spencer Henderson works closely with Cameron and has taken him under his wing."

Last season he won the Stephen Gallacher U14 event and the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Order of Merit.

Cameron played last year in the Quadrangular International, featuring Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Holland and against France at U16 and UI4 level and England at U16 level.

He came in fourth at a European U14 event in Finland back in June.

On average Cameron practises 10 hours a day, including playing during the peak season and goes to the Fit Pit in Troon to work out.

Asked his ambition Cameron said: "My long term goal is to turn pro and play some Tour events. Next year I want to be picked for the Under-18 Home Internationals. I enjoy working hard at golf and seeing the results pay off. My favourite golfer is Jordan Spieth - I really like his attitude."

He won a place in the Scottish Golf Academy three years ago after going for trials. Every year they coach and take players on residential weekends and this has helped him develop his skills.
