TORRANCE House and the Henry Thow Oval were awash with champagne on Saturday as Prestwick Cricket Club celebrated the biggest success in their history.

They were crowned Western Premier Division champions for the first time on Saturday, despite not bowling a ball on the final day of the league season.

Their scheduled league game at East Kilbride at Torrance House was rained off with closest challengers Ferguslie also unable to play, meaning they could not be caught.

Now they will go for Scottish glory on Saturday as they head to Ferguslie to face East champions Heriot's in the Cricket Scotland Grand Final on Saturday.

Rated as rank outsiders at the start of the season, Shazad Rafiq's men remarkably won 10 of 12 games played and they stayed top of the table for the entire second half of the campaign, with away wins against bitter rivals Ayr and Clydesdale proving pivotal in getting over the finish line.

The success was their third of the season after they secured the Greenwood Cup and Western Cup.

Skipper Shazad Rafiq was impressed but not surprised with his team's success and said: "I would say the best team have won the league this year. We fancied ourselves all year, and set out to win it. we played confident, good cricket. We were aggressive and positive and there were no jersey fillers. The win at Ayr gave us belief that we were there. I would say the first game of the season was crucial, we had nine wickets down and needed 60 runs against Kelburne and we won it. It was as a great team effort, and seven, eight or nine performers have stepped at different times.

"This is the highlight of my career so far, I have been at the club for 20 years and this has been the highlight so far. Thanks go to the sponsors for their backing throughout the year. It has been a phenomenal effort by everyone. The boys deserve great credit for their efforts. There's one stand out. We have surprised the league and hopefully we can win the playoff. It's a great year for Ayrshire cricket with Irvine winning. It would be great if we could defend the title next season."

All-rounder Sachin Chaudhary was delighted with the success and said: "We just took it game to game, were were underdogs and no-one mentioned us until the end of June. You could say we slipped under the radar at first. The wins at Clydesdale and Kelburne made us believe we could win the league. It was amazing winning seven matches in a row and to win 10 of our league games. There's a great spirit in the dressing room and that has been a factor."
