SILVERWARE success was celebrated by Ayr last Wednesday when they won the McCulloch Cup.

And derby rivals Prestwick will also hope to have a trophy in their cabinet after maintaining spot in the Western Premier Division.

Ayr took on Poloc in the cup final at Bothwell Policies, Uddingston.

They won the toss, batted first and got off to a solid start with Michael Papps and Neil Smith (36) putting on 50 for the first wicket, before both fell in quick succession.

The innings was held together by Shujja Khan (32 not out) as they finished on 118-8 in their 20 overs.

The Poloc innings started off on a similar vain with the openers putting on 50 for the first wicket before Andi McElnea, Callum Leck and Michael Papps started to make inroads into the Poloc batting with some tight, accurate bowling, leaving them on 102-9, needing 17 of the last over for victory with their last pair at the wicket, and off the second ball an excellent throw from the deep by Matt Crawshaw saw Lewis James run out, as Poloc fell 15 runs short of their target.

McElnea finished with figures of 3-12 and two wickets each for Papps and Leck.

Prestwick preserved top spot in the league with a 49-run win against Greenock. But they are just seven per cent ahead of closest challengers Ferguslie with two games left.

Skipper Shazad Rafiq said: "It was good to see different people chipping in and Fraser Macdonald had a great innings and a good partnership with Tom Fleet. Mitchell Rao had a great game. But we have a very difficult game against champions Clydesdale and we must look to win it. Our fate is in our own hands."
