AYR United were held to a 1-1 draw at Greenock in what was a tight affair at Cappielow, write Calum Campbell and High Maxwell.
Although Morton held the upper hand in the first half, a 45th-minute strike by Craig Moore equalised after Lawrence Shankland's 37th minute opener.
The visitors were rejuvenated in the second half as the game stretched and were unlucky not to find the winner against a tiring Morton.
In the 80th minute skipper Nicky Devlin squared the ball across the six-yard line only for Harkins, Moore and Docherty to fail to put any meaningful contact on the ball which was finally cleared.
Manager Ian McCall was pleased with the team's performance and praised the returning Balatoni for a stalwart performance.
Ayr remain in bottom however have gained a point on St Mirren after their defeat to Dundee United meaning that with a gap of only twin points and two games to go, there is still everything to play for.
