CHAMPAGNE corks exploded and celebrations lasted well into the wee small hours at Fullarton on Saturday as Marr Rugby Club celebrated the biggest day in their history.

A sizeable 500-strong purple and gold army descended on Braidholm as the home side defeated GHA 39-22 to win the National League Division One title and with it a place in the top league, the BT Premiership for the first time.

They have gone from the 100th-ranked club in Scottish Rugby into the top 10 as they prepare to do battle next season with derby rivals Ayr and the likes of Glasgow Hawks, Currie and Heriots.

Overjoyed president Kevin Quinn said: "We have gone from being the 100th club seven years ago to the top club within seven years and our progression has been staged. In 2010 we took stock of where we wanted to be and our target was Craig Redpath. He has been a cornerstone in our success because of his professional approach to rugby."
