AYR RFC are set to catch their opponents between a ruck and a hard place, as they face off against 20 Scottish teams – as well as international sides from Sweden and England – at the Aberdeen Asset Management Melrose Sevens on Saturday, April 8.

The annual tournament – now in its 126th year – has captured the hearts of rugby fans across the globe, and around 12,000 spectators are expected to travel to Melrose – the birthplace of rugby sevens – to see the world’s oldest tournament take place.

The Millbrae side will face stiff opposition on the day from 23 other Scottish and international teams all eager to lift the coveted Ladies Cup. Before the final, the future stars of rugby sevens from the University of Edinburgh and University of St Andrews will also go head to head in an exhibition match.

Rugby sevens was conceived in the town of Melrose over a century ago, by local butcher Ned Haig as a fundraiser for his local team.

One of the fastest growing team sports, it is now played all over the world and last year was successfully introduced into the Olympics.

Title sponsor Aberdeen Asset Management are supporting the historic rugby sevens tournament in 2017.

Martin Gilbert, chief executive of Aberdeen, said: “Rugby sevens’ popularity has exploded globally in recent years, however, its roots are still firmly planted in the Scottish Borders. Aberdeen is proud to continue supporting this historic tournament."

The Aberdeen Asset Management Melrose Sevens offers fun both on and off the pitch, making the tournament an exciting experience for families, couples and rugby fans.

Couple that with the impressive fancy dress and electric atmosphere that fill the stands, and it makes for the perfect day out.

Tickets for the event start from £10 for children, £15 for senior citizens and £20 for adults. Family tickets are also available for £50, admitting two adults and two children.
