AYR UNITED 2 (after extra-time)

UNITED squeezed into the Quarter-final of the Scottish Cup despite a disappointing performance against League 2 outfit Clyde at Broadwood Stadium.
An extra-time winner from substitute Michael Wardrope set up a last eight showdown in the capital against Hearts or Hibs.
Late Wardrope said: "Craig McGuffie fired over a great cross and I was pleased with my finish. I was going to celebrate with the fans but I jumped on Craig McGuffie and the rest of the players surrounded us all. I didn't celebrate at night because we got home so late.
"This has to be the highlight of my career so far and hopefully I get regular games. It's great to get into the quarter-finals and we would like to go further. I'm not too bothered who we face but I fancy Hearts as I have never played at Tynecastle. But for now the main aim is to survive in the Championship and we have a massive game at Dumbarton on Saturday which we must aim to win."
Declan McDaid opened the scoring after only 10 minutes but Clyde rallied, taking the match to the Honest Men snatched a deserved equaliser with just three minutes of the 90 remaining. Yet again it was former Ayr striker David Gormley whose header sent the tie into extra time.
The highly motivated and determined Clyde side had the best of the extra time but was sucker punched when Ayr sneaked a late winner.
Clyde could count themselves unlucky to fall behind to McDaid’s opener after starting the game well and putting Ayr’s defence under pressure. With only Ayr’s second sortie forward, McDaid found himself a yard of space 20 yards from goal and he rifled a low, stinging drive past the despairing Connor Quinn to put Ayr a goal to the good.
Rather than collapse, this spurred Clyde on and they continued to dominate proceedings. The Bully Wee carved out a host of excellent opportunities to draw level but somehow failed to make Ayr pay.
As the game wore on, it looked as if it wasn’t to be for Clyde, although their play certainly deserved equaliser. With time running out Clyde manager, Barry Ferguson, threw caution to the wind sending ex-Ayr centre-back Chris Smith in to the forward line and going all out for a goal. With Ayr trying to cope with a crowded box, David Gormley slipped his marker and made for the front post, meeting Scott Clinton’s corner and powering the ball into the net. This sent the home funds into raptures in the tie into extra time.
Neither side looked particularly threatening and has extra time wore. With penalties looming, up stepped Wardrope to send Ayr into the quarter-finals. Craig McGuffie got the better of Phil Johnston before lifting the ball across the face of the goal where Wardrope was on hand to bundle the ball home.
As the final whistle blew, Ayr breathed a sigh of relief and manager, Ian McCall can now refocus his players ahead of Saturday’s vital Championship match away to Dumbarton on Saturday.
