BOWLS: GARRY HOOD

MAJOR success was celebrated by Prestwick's Junior side on Sunday.

They lifted the Top Ten title, defeating a strong Abbeyview side at home in the final.

Darren Weir, the Scottish Under-18 champion, led the way with a 21-11 victory in the Singles, and Adam Sturgeon and Rebecca Houston (skip) added a 20-6 win in the Pairs.

The Triple of Kirsty Noon, Ross Gouldstone and Jordan Law (skip) added a 15-7 win

The Prestwick Four of Rachel Houston, Lewis Brown, Ryan McCulloch and Louise Noon (skip) lost out 11-17 but played their part in what was an outstanding team effort.

Meanwhile Scotland came up just short in their attempt to lift the RB Hilton Trophy at Llanelli IBC in Wales at the weekend.

The Scottish team, which included Paul Foster MBE, Paul Boyd and Ayr's Stuart Wyllie, gaining his first international honours when he was named as a reserve, dispatched Wales and Ireland with plenty to spare, as did England.

Saturday saw the Scots in confident mood to face their southern cousins, and Ayr's Wyllie was drafted into the team for his first game, but it was England who started strongest and led all he way.

Scotland looked like they could catch them at one stage as they clawed away at their lead, and despite getting the lead down to single figures, it was England who turned the screw over the last five ends across the green to take the match and the title.

It was a relatively good week for the Scots, managed by Ayr's former internationalist Gordon Neil, but as is most often the case, the winner of the Scotland v England game take the title, and with so little separating the players, it can go either way. This year it went England's way
