AYR Roads Cycling Club are gearing up to the prospects of another successful year.

In the South Lanarkshire Cyclo Cross Series, three club members represented Ayrshire in the first round of four events being held in the prestigious venue of Chatelherault Park, Lanark.

The trio, led by the club's double Scottish Gold Medallist, Janet Erskine featured prominently in the race, which was held on a wintry day with treacherous conditions underwheel.

Janet (pictured) maintained her form by taking the silverware and the 1st Lady Award on the day.

Brian Yates, who has become a first class rider in cyclo cross events, just missed a podium place by taking fourth place in the seniors event and Fraser Tait finished well up in the Veteran's Race.

All are hoping to compete in all four events and along with other club members will be competing in other early season cyclo cross races, including the new National Super Quaich series. Again this will be run over four events, with the second event being held on home ground at Rozelle Park on January 24.

The first of the Super Quaich Series was run off in dreadful conditions on Sunday, with the venue Rouken Glen, Glasgow. There were many non-starters and finishers.

Ayr Roads CC were well represented and in both the “A” Race and “B” Race were the top Ayrshire Club.

In Race B, Fraser Tait had a magnificent ride to finish fourth. Effectively, this promotes him to the “A” grade races for the rest of the Super Quaich Series. Brian Yates had a storming ride to place him amongst the best seniors, juniors and vets in Scotland. Super-vet Alex McAllister also finished in fine form.

Meanwhile six Ayr Burners Cycling QTS recruits lined up in Sunday's Super Quaich Series event at Rouken Glen.

Some 200 riders enjoyed the slippy battle with the men'stop spot being claimed by Stevie Jackson of Glasgow United CC, with Anne Ewing of WV Breda winning the ladies race.

Round two of the Super Quaich Series takes place on Sunday, January 24 by the Doonbank Trofee, which will be held in Rozelle Park in Ayr and is being organised and hosted by the Ayr Burners.

Doonbank race organiser and Burners stalwart JP Baxter is encouraging all to come along to Rozelle on the 24th to witness 180 of the best cyclist in Scotland take on the tough Belgian-style course which will take in the surroundings of the stunning Rozelle estate, including some key features from an old pitch and putt course.

Club spokesman JP Baxter said: "For anyone that's never seen a cyclocross race this will be an eye-opener. The racing is fast and furious and you're sure to see plenty of great cyclists using some impressive technical skills, including many British elite level riders and Commonwealth athletes.

"There are also kids races taking place in the morning before the A and B races take place. I'd encourage people to look out cow bells and anything else that can make a racket and come along to encourage the racers."
