DUNDONALD Primary is going all out in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint - by switching on its own £34,000 wind turbine.

The school is the first in Scotland to receive funding for a wind turbine through the Co-operative"s £2million Green Energy for Schools scheme.

On Friday the children tested out the wind conditions using colourful hand-held windmills as the turbine was switched on for the first time.

Community members, along with former pupil and designer of the turbine Gordon Proven, were also there for the switch-on of the green system.

Primary five pupil and school eco-committee member Zoe Cobbett, aged 10, said: 'We are so pleased to have our own wind turbine. This will allow us to produce our own power and help us to protect our planet for the future.'

Installation of Dundonald Primary"s 6kW turbine has been made possible with a £10,000 Co-operative grant, match-funded by £17,000 from the Government"s Low Carbon Building Programme.
