A PIECE of Troon’s history will now be berthed in The Walker Hall after it was saved from relocation to the Maritime Museum in Irvine.
A glass case with a model of a ship, ITAUBA, was built by Ailsa Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.
Troon Community Council’s vice chairman, Douglas Graham, noticed the glass case to have been moved from its usual position at Troon Primary School.
When questioned about its whereabouts, the school headteacher mentioned that it was being moved to the Maritime Museum.
Douglas, said: “I noticed the model wasn’t at the school when I was picking up my grandchildren.
“The headteacher said that she had asked if the Troon Town Hall wanted it and apparently they said that they didn’t.
“The ship model was made in Troon so it is a part of the town’s history.
“Troon Community Council wanted it to be saved and we knew it couldn’t be moved to North Ayrshire when it is a piece of history in South Ayrshire.”
He added: “As far as we know, it will be going into The Walker Hall.”
The ship was built in 1910, and is 270.1ft long and 42.2ft wide.
Her first owner was Cia Nacionale de Nav Costeira, Rio de Janeiro, with her first port of register in Rio de Janeiro.
Her subsequent owner and registration history goes back to 1931 with the Brazilian Navy as a survey vessel.
She met her fate in 1944 where she was torpedoed on July 7, while carrying cadets.
