Crowds thronged the High Street for the illumination, which saw shoppers get in the party mood with entertainment from Irvine singer Sean Kennedy and the Espedair Street band.

Jai who wore a festive jumper for the occasion said he was thrilled to get the chance to get Ayr in the Christmas spirit as the headline act on Saturday.

The former Britain’s Got Talent winner said: “When it comes to my home town I will do whatever it takes to help. I had a great time, as I always have so much fun in Ayr.” Planned headliner Matt, 30 - whose track When We Collide was number one for three weeks -apologised for missing his Scottish date on Twitter.

He said: “ Due to an accident in town we were unable to make it onto our flight. With sincere apologies, I will be unable to attend today in Ayr.” South Ayrshire Council head of community, enterprise and development Jill Cronin said: “Due to circumstances beyond his control Matt Cardle was unable to attend the Ayr Christmas lights switch-on. However, our very own local musical hero Jai McDowall came to the rescue and switched on the Christmas lights and gave the crowds the first every public performance of his new single.

“I know many people had come along to see Matt Cardle, but while you may have been disappointed he was not there, I would like to thank everyone for giving Jai such a warm welcome and being so understanding.

“It was a great family event and everyone got into the spirit of Christmas and had a fantastic time.” See this week's Ayr Advertiser for loads of pictures.
