Edinburgh's Arthur's Seat was named the best view in the whole of Scotland with the writer praising the site for its "fine views" over the country's capital.

Irvine said: "The best approach is through Holyrood Park from the foot of Canongate, by Holyrood Palace.

"This igneous core of an extinct volcano, with the precipitous sill of Salisbury Crags, presides over the city and offers fine views for those fit enough to reach it.

"The top is 251m high; on a clear day you can see to a distance of about 60 miles. Surprisingly wild, considering its proximity to the city."

Cathkin Braes in Glasgow was also listed with the writer praising its proximity to the "delightfully rural village" of Carmunnock.

Scott’s View featured at number four on the list and was lauded for its "magnificent sweep" of the "beloved Border country."

The Summer Isles and The Law in Dundee were also highly recommended as places to visit to see some stunning views.
