THE star and creator of the hugely-popular Mrs Brown’s Boys has revealed he would kill off the show’s main character if it was ever axed.

Brendan O’Carroll - who plays foul-mouthed Irish matriarch Agnes Brown - has enjoyed massive success with the show since it first hit screens in 2011, particular in Scotland.

The 62-year-old first got his big break with the sitcom when it appeared live on stage at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow in the late 1990s.

However, in a new interview, he said: “We are booked to do Christmas specials for the BBC until 2020 but if they go, ‘We are going to drop you as we don’t think it’s strong enough’ then I’d kill Agnes off.

“Our final episode would be the funniest show I’ve ever written for the first 24 minutes.”

“Then the last four minutes would break your f****** heart,” he added, reports the Daily Star.

In 2016, Mrs Brown’s Boys beat The Office and Gavin & Stacey to be named best British sitcom of the 21st century.

The BBC One show attracts millions of viewers and has spawned a successful movie - with an upcoming sequel - despite being dismissed by critics.

Ben Elton recently launched a furious defence of the live show as he warned the popular format was in danger of dying out.

The Young Ones and Blackadder writer called the genre a “great popular art form” as he hit out at critics for treating it with “thoughtless contempt.”

Elton cited the successes of Dad’s Army, The Likely Lads, Steptoe And Son, Absolutely Fabulous and dozens of other sitcoms.

He said “it is not a tired and cheesy format at all” as he defended the BBC’s most recent success story in the genre.
