THE 'JEWEL in Ayrshire's golfing crown' is to be revamped with future Open Championships in mind.

Trump Turnberry's Ailsa course will be overhauled to include five new holes and a change to the famous 'donut bunker'.

Hole nine will finally become a par three with players hitting across the bay to the iconic Turnberry point and hole 11 will also play across the shoreline.

Numbers 10 and 14 will be lengthened to create new par fives while the sixth hole will shrink to a challenging par three.

Owner Donald Trump sent his son Eric to South Ayrshire to lay out the changes.

Eric said: “Our plans are extensive and will offer a new playing experience which will be unrivalled anywhere in the world. "Our main objectives have been to retain the routing of the course, but to emphasise the spectacular coastline views."

Work is set to start in September and the course will be ready for June next year.

The clubhouse will also be renovated to the tune of £10 million.

And work is already underway on the Duel in the Sun restaurant - a project which will finish in time for the RICOH Womens’ British Open this year.

"I think it will be the best clubhouse in Europe," added Eric.

Architect Martin Ebert, Director of Mackenzie & Ebert, was given the task of creating the new look.

Commenting on his introduction to Donald Trump, he said: "I think the conversation went something like 'you've been hired'.

"He (Trump) is constantly thinking about how we can make things better."

Ebert also described Trump as "demanding", adding: "Perfection should be demanding."

Mackenzie & Ebert Ltd have designed six golf courses including Royal Troon, but Ebert added: "Turnberry is the jewel in the crown of these six."

Members of the golf club were shown the new layout weeks before the press, and Ebert claimed there were no questions raised.

Asked whether there was any opposition to the changes, Ebert said: "I can see that some people may consider it a step too far but I am hoping that reasonable people looking at these proposals will see that it's a genuine improvement to a great golf course.

"The re-born Ailsa course will create a much enhanced golfing experience, making even more use of the spectacular landscape and the iconic historic scenes that make Turnberry so special. "That, in turn, will lead to even more enjoyable golf for everyone and further dramatic championships at Turnberry.” He said the course has the potential to be extended up to 7450 yards - it was 7204 yards in 2009.

Ebert also described the changes to the sixth hole as "Turnberry's own Postage Stamp" - a reference to the famous Royal Troon hole.

The legendary 'donut bunker' will change shape to a more crater-like shape - as it was in 1946.

Asked about possibly hosting the Open Championship, Eric Trump said: "We would like to do it.

"It's really up to the R&A, we're here and waiting and we would like to have it happen.

"I think we will."
