Mystery over Centrum 'offer'

Published: 26 Feb 2008 10:00

A LEADING ice rink operator have claimed they DID make an enquiry to take over Prestwick"s Centrum Arena.

Arena Group who own the Planet-ice brand claim they made the enquiry earlier - only to be rebuffed by owners the Dawn Group.

Astonishingly the group who operate several ice rinks around the UK claim Dawn asked if they"d be interested in tearing it down instead.

Managing director Mike Petrious said: 'When we approached Dawn through our agents we were told there was no want for an ice rink in Prestwick.

'Someone later approached us through our London office with a view to demolishing the arena but we said we weren"t interested in demolishing and would like to open it as an ice rink, but Dawn came back saying they weren"t interested. So where do you go from there?'

Centrum has lain empty for the last six years.

The site is earmarked for leisure use and Sainsbury"s superstore have already had an application to build a superstore turned down.

Earlier this month we revelled Dawn had applied to South Ayrshire Council for a demolition order to tear it down.

The move was met with outrage from local campaign group Friends of Eagles - who want to see ice hockey brought back to the arena.

Dawn claimed no 'commercial offer' had been received.

But speaking exclusively to the Advertiser series Mr Petrious said: 'I can confirm we would be most definitely interested in running Centrum as an ice rink.'
