A TROON youngster has wowed judges with her artistic talent and stolen the show in a national competition.

Kate Haining, 12, won the Morrisons" calendar competition after designing an image to illustrate the month she was born, which was picked from thousands of entries to represent the month of February in the printed calendar.

All the calendars are being sold to raise money for store"s charities, ChildLine and Help the Aged.

Speaking to the Troon Times Kate"s dad Mark said: 'When Kate saw the competition in Morrisons" cafe in Troon, she was desperate to enter as she liked the idea of designing a picture to represent her birthday month, February, and although it was only a week before the deadline she had lots of ideas and wanted to give it a go.

'She couldn"t believe it when she found out that she had won as it was a nationwide competition and she didn"t expect to win. She couldn"t wait to see her picture in the calendar. An added bonus was getting a Nintendo Wii as well.

'Myself and my wife, Carol, were both very excited for her and extremely proud.'

The second year Queen Margaret Academy pupil is also incredibly outgoing and enjoys a host of sport activities including being on the school"s netball team, playing tennis and is also a member of South Ayrshire"s swim team.

Not fulfilled with all her sporting attributes the youngster also enjoy reading and playing the guitar.

It"s hoped the 2009 calendar will raise over £30,000 for the two charities.

Morrisons" cafe controller Marianne Jones explained: 'We have had a great response to the competition, and we"ve been able to pick twelve fantastic pictures for the calendar. We want to thank Kate and all the other entrants for working so hard on their designs, as it"s with their help that we will be able to provide such critical support for so many people.

'The calendar makes a great gift for Christmas. Hopefully we will be selling lots of them as presents and raising lots of money for the charities.'
