A SPECIALIST sea cadet centre in Monkton is to close after almost 40 years of training local kids.

The National Sea Cadet Engineering Training Centre will close at the end of this month, with the loss of two jobs.

Announcing the closure of the facility based at HMS Gannet, along with five other of its national training centres, the Sea Cadet Corps blamed 'excess capacity' which 'put considerable pressure' on the charity's budget.

Following the decision Central Ayrshire MP Brian Donohoe said he was "very disappointed" to hear of the sudden closure.

Mr Donohoe said: "I very much regret that the decision to close this facility was taken, and that there appears to have been no process of consultation. It might have been judged to be a response to over-capacity within a national network, but that's no consolation to people in Ayrshire."
