GIRVAN 1668 are continuing their hard work to bring the community together to celebrate 350 years of the town as a burgh.

They have secured funding from the participatory budge scheme and William Grant Foundation to allow them to be part of the Girvan Folk Festival.

The event will take place on Sunday, May 6 at the Hamilton Arms and will feature The Tannahill Weavers, Adam McNaughtan, Len Graham & Jack Lynch, Rita Gallagher, Lori Watson Trio, George Duff and loads more.

It is hoped this will promote some of Girvan’s strengths as a family friendly town and an tourist destination.

Girvan 1668 are also preparing a bid for awards for all to market the project.

The group are hoping to update the Girvan 300 handbook which was last issued in 2000. The Reverend Ian McLachlan has agreed to review the ‘past section’ and the younger members of the community will look at the past 18 years.

Girvan 1668 want to continue to engage with the young people and inspire them to get involved after the got all three primary schools and Girvan Academy to take part in a logo and branding competition.

There were winners from Girvan Primary, Sacred Heart, Invergarven and Girvan Academy but the overall winner was from Girvan Academy whose entry is featured above.

The prizewinners were recognised at an event at Girvan Academy last month.

Other projects Girvan 1668 want to get involved in are the Straiton Agricultural Show, CRAG Banner Project, Gaberlunzie’s 50th Anniversary, a 17th century market, Girvan May market and a re-enactment event.

We will have more information soon.
