GIRVAN South Parish Church remembered the ‘forgotten father’ of the RAF on Easter Sunday as the organisation celebrated its centenary.
At 9.50am on Sunday, April 1 there was a short service at Doon Cemetery and floral tributes were placed at the graveside of Lieutenant General Sir David Henderson.
Sir David Henderson, who was Head of the Royal Flying Corp, learned to fly at 49 and played an important toll in the foundation of the RAF.
Sir David’s son, Ian Henderson, was buried at Doon Cemetery after he was killed in a plane accident at Turnberry in 1918.
His father’s ashes were scattered next to him and a headstone is in place to honour them both.
Girvan South Parish were one of three services taking place across the UK on Sunday including Parliament Square and London, 80 the Strand, London.
