GIRVAN Harbour’s pier is an ‘accident waiting to happen’ according to concerned harbour users.

They are worried about the safety and feel that South Ayrshire Council should be spending money to ensure its upkeep and to make sure that no-one is hurt.

Former Girvan resident ‎Malc Hutchison, got in touch with us to raise his concerns.

He said: “Clearly the council should be spending money in the correct places about Girvan Harbour.

“Someone will be badly hurt or killed, the structure of the pier is unsafe. Instead of spending money for wood boat putting gates and cameras up.. how about fixing the dangerous pier?

“The general public don’t see what we see! I fear for the safety of the fisherman and there boats and the general public.... it’s a accident waiting to happen...”

He is not the only person who has concerns. Many backed him up on social media.

Morag McCrindle agreed: “That is in bad shape and your right Malc we the public cant see it, but I’m quite sure will be behind you all the way with the same concerns that you have raised.”

Kim Kelly commented: “The council don’t spend any money sensibly Malc. It’s pathetic what they waste money on.”

Sandra Wood said: “The previous SAC admin has spent money in the wrong places like a cycle lane that was ripped up less than two years later; someone should have been sacked for that alone.

“But with new team running the council I have faith in a turn around and money spent more wisely. Already they are starting to listen to public need instead of their own publicity. Go to your local councillor and let him see these photos.

“I’m sure they aren’t even aware of what’s needed. I can tell tell you its no more closed shop with SAC since new people were elected on to their team and not before time.”

Stewart Turner, Head of Roads: Ayrshire Roads Alliance said: “Ensuring the safety of the general public and vessel operators using Girvan Harbour is paramount to the Ayrshire Roads Alliance.

The structural integrity of the quayside is checked regularly as part of an extensive maintenance programme. I can confirm that the quayside is sound and poses no threat to visitors or vessel operators.

“Some facing stonework has been identified for repair and a tender has been issued for this specialist work. Investment is continuing at Girvan Harbour. New fencing, which was funded externally, was installed recently to ensure that a safe area can be created when timber is being offloaded.

"This measure ensures the safety of harbour users. An additional camera was also installed, at the request of the Girvan Harbour Users Group, so that vessels entering the harbour could be easily identified.”
