FOUR signs belonging to the A77 Action Group have been stolen from around the Ayr and Girvan area.

Between the hours of 7pm on July 10 and 5pm on July 11, four A77 Action Group banners equating to a two-figure sum were stolen from four different locations.

The signs were taken a quarter mile south of Girvan, half a mile north of Girvan, on the A77 near to Turnberry Hotel and one from the Holmstone roundabout.

Speaking to the Ayr Advertiser, John Campbell, a volunteer who helped start to A77 Action Group campaign, said: “We are looking to see if anyone know who has taken the banner or if they have any information, to contact either the police on 101 or contact us through our A77 Action Group Facebook page.”

The A77 Action Group is run by local volunteers who are calling to urge the Scottish Government to create a dual carriageway on the A77 from Ayr Whitlett’s Roundabout south to the two ferry ports located at Cairnryan, including the point at which the A77 connects with the A75.
Writing on the petition on the Scottish Governments website, it states: “The A77 is long overdue an upgrade of this scale south of Ayr.

“Not only with bypasses for the affected communities but also that there are sections that are prone to landslips.

“These landslips seem to take years to fix, when similar situations elsewhere are solved very quickly in comparison, such as the A9 Perth to Pitlochry in August 2004, A83 Rest and Be Thankful, A82 Spean Bridge to Invergarry.”

Mr Campbell added: “We want to inform people of how important it is to have new, modern and safe roads for people in Ayrshire going all the way down to Carinryan.”

As we went to press, it is understood that the signs were taken down by Scotland Transerv for Transport Scotland.
