SOUTH Ayrshire schools are challenged to create Scotland's healthiest lunchbox in a competition called 'Munch that Lunch'.

Launched by Food Standards Scotland (FSS), ‘Munch That Lunch’ will give school pupils in South Ayrshire the chance to win a class trip to the Royal Highland Show next month.

Pupils from primary four to primary seven, are being asked to design and draw a healthy balanced packed lunch based on FSS’s healthy eating advice.

The winner will receive an trip for them and their class to the 177th Royal Highland Show at Ingliston on Thursday, June 22.

FSS will have a host of interactive fun and games at the Royal Highland Show's foodhall to help visitors get hands-on and learn about healthy eating and food safety.

Douglas Hutchison, South Ayrshire Council’s director of educational services, said: “The competition gives schools across South Ayrshire the chance to grab a coveted national prize and I’m sure there will be lots of interest in getting involved.

“The health of our young people is important and we actively promote high quality food at all times to make sure children enjoy their food while also understanding what makes for a good, healthy meal.

“I’d like to wish everyone who enters the best of luck, and hope that this year’s winning entry comes from a South Ayrshire school.”

Food Standards Scotland’s, head of nutrition science and policy, Heather Peace, added: “Our Munch That Lunch competition is the perfect opportunity for teachers and pupils to talk about healthy eating and get creative – healthy food doesn’t mean dull food.

“It’s vital that we give children the best possible chance in life and educating about a healthy and balanced diet is key to improving Scotland’s health.

"The Eatwell Guide is a valuable tool for sharing this advice and we are looking forward to receiving plenty of healthy and creative entries from schools across Scotland.”
