GIRVAN Town Team are looking to expand and encourage more young people to get involved in their area.

The group meet once a month, where 20 people on average attend. Since starting in 2012 they have achieved SCIO status and are working on a number of projects including the dementia friendly project and the men's shed.

Roddy Macdonald, the town team coordinator, said: "We are looking to develop this organisation even further and get more young people involved.

"At the moment we are not yet sure if we would work together or separately deadline with different issues we face in the town. But we feel this is the next part of the journey."

Over the last five years Girvan Town Team have achieved charity status and were awarded £6000 from RS Macdonald Trust and UWS which has allowed them to tackle difficult and rewarding projects.

Roddy was appointed in 2014 after taking early retirement from his position as head of services for South Ayrshire Council.

He explained: "I took early retirement about six years ago and set up my own business - MacDonald Partnerships. We try and help people and their communities.

"As head of services, I was involved in some difficult decisions which affected Girvan, so it seemed like there was unfinished business which I had to complete, so I got involved in the town team."

So far they have set up their dementia friendly project and will be working with the Z1 Girvan Youth Trust who are also working on a programme to change the colour of the benches.

They are also working on their Men's Shed project which will allow men to come together and work in projects. They are also looking into a women's version.

Roddy concluded: "On average 20 people attend the town team meetings each month and get involved in the projects. We would encourage even more people to get involved no matter what age."
