GOLF takes over South Ayrshire this week as contestants from every corner of the UK head for the area.

Hundreds are expected to take part in the 66th Golf Week, which has a reputation as one of the most testing challenges on the amateur calendar.

A diverse range of competitions are being staged, reflecting the broad range of players of varying abilities that will be taking to Belleisle, Seafield, and Dalmilling golf courses.

Ayr Golf Week will naturally attract people from the local hot-beds of the sport, such as Troon and Prestwick, between Sunday, June 4 and Saturday, June 10.

There are nine different competitions across the week, including the showcase Tam o' Shanter and Handyside Tournament with a prize of £5,000 for the week-long event.

Among the other long-standing favourites are the Stableford Competition, Open Mixed Foursomes, Ladies Tri-am, and Ladies Open Greensomes.

Jill Cronin, head of leisure at South Ayrshire Council, said: "We’ve had a great response to this year’s competition with more than 600 entries across all the different competitions.

“With the fantastic new Belleisle Clubhouse acting as the base for Ayr Golf Week competitors and spectators alike can be sure of a first rate experience when they travel to be part of this year’s event.

“The one thing we can’t guarantee is the weather but given the summer sun of recent weeks we’re hoping for perfect conditions when our golfers tee-off and I would like to wish everyone taking part the very best of luck.”
