AN 'ASPIRING communities' project in Barrhill could see the development of affordable housing in a bid to boost tourism to the village.

The plans, which are at an early stage, are part of the new Scottish Government Fund but need support of the villagers and the community council.

Fionnadh Ratchford, former community councillor and member of the Barrhill Development Association, spoke to current members of the Barrhill community council.

She explained plans for upcoming projects for the village as part of the Aspirations for Barrhill, which aims to sustain the population with development facilities.

Ms Ratchford, who is also the Barrhill Community Interest Company director (BCIC), said: "The BCIC wishes to enlist the support of the Community Council as a partner as the project will include identifying projects of mutual benefit.

"Aspirations for Barrhill would involve projects to sustain the population, with the development of facilities for residents and to encourage tourism. It is hoped to develop low cost, affordable housing.

"It is an opportunity for local people to get together and help with the bid and become partners e.g. local businesses like Solway Precast, whose partner, John Barr, has given his support to the idea.

"This will be separate from windfarm benefits. The project will determine where the local opportunities lie. New houses could be built and social landlords created.

Fionnadh Ratchford previously held discussions with Councillor Clark and Stewart Lindsay, former Ailsa Horizons CEO. The funding is in two stages, the second being ring-fenced to the tune of £50K.

The community council unanimously approved that, at this stage, they are happy to support the BCIC bid.
