HUNDREDS of people took part in events across South Ayrshire recently to celebrate Earth Hour.

The Council worked with Ayr Central to bring entertainment with an environmental twist to the town.

Locals and visitors learned about everything from recycling and real nappies through to protecting wildlife. Musicians entertained the crowds and there was eco-friendly face painting and other fun activities for children.

Young people from Queen Margaret Academy were also there showing off a dress which made the finals of the 'junkkouture' competition where teenagers compete to design outfits made from recycled materials.

There was an Earth Hour Lego tournament at Carnegie Library which led to some marvellous creations and the Bookbug group was also a big hit.

Over 100 people gathered at Belleisle Park to enjoy a sunny afternoon planting wild flowers with Council rangers, listening to sustainable stories and making seed bombs to take home.

During the big switch off, around 70 people in Girvan headed along to the Community Gardens which had been illuminated using renewable solar energy.

There was hot soup and children had fun toasting sticky marshmallows.
Mike Newall, head of neighbourhood services at South Ayrshire Council, said: “I would like to thank everyone that got involved in Earth Hour, it was a great success.

"There was a real family feel to the events which is great as we are all committed to protecting South Ayrshire for future generations.”
