A DRUG user from Ayr stole her grandmothers television and sold it to cash converters.

Maria Boyle, who was living at Macadam Place with her grandmother at the time, stole the television and sold it for the value of £50.

The 32-year-old appeared before Sheriff Mhairi Mactaggart at Ayr sheriff Court last week.

The court heard that Boyle told the Police that she assumed her elderly relative would not mind her stealing the television as long as she got the money back.

Procurator Fiscal, Scott Toal, said: "The complainer was at home and the accused had access to the house and 42 inch television. She took it and went to cash converters and sold it for £50.

"When family members noticed the television was missing, they phoned the Police."

Speaking on his clients behalf, defence solicitor Steven Maxwell, said: "The television that the accused had stolen has now been returned.

"If Ms Boyle is to return to the area, she cannot return to the house where she lived with her grandmother.

"The half way house is where she is to go.

"She has also been in contact with an organisation to help with her addiction."

The court adjourned the diet for the purpose of obtaining a drug assessment.

Sheriff Mhairi Mactaggart said: "I want you to understand that what I am about to do is for your own good and your own benefit.

"I want to be assured you have a place to stay. Until then, I will remand you until you have a place to stay if you cannot live with your grandmother.

"I want the drug treatment testing to be done over a short period of two weeks."

The court will resume this case on Thursday, April 6 at 10:30am.
