TWO teenagers from Girvan Academy have bagged themselves a trip of a lifetime to Houston Texas Space School.

Lauren McEwan and Antonio Sisi are just two of 50 young people worldwide selected to attend the two week programme in America.

The course runs from July 23 until August 7 this summer.
The fifth year pupils were put forward by their physics teacher Mr Lam with the condition that they both got an A in their higher physics prelim which they did.

During their two-week stay, the students will participate in several cultural and social events designed to provide a setting in which they will demonstrate and share their respective cultures with each other and their host families.

Experiencing and celebrating international diversity as a Space School student is frequently the first step for these students as they work closely with each other.

Learning about the results of differences in communication due to language barriers, terminology differences, varying levels of educational competency, and cultural differences, causes them to recognise how these differences are magnified in professional situations.

The goal of Space School is to demonstrate that building upon diversity in an educational team building environment can lay the foundation for international collaboration in space exploration initiatives, which will be required in order to design and complete projects of the magnitude required for successful space exploration and development.

A Crowdfunding page has been set up by Laura Finch to help the Girvan teens with funding.

The school have projected the costs will likely be £2500 and the kids have to fundraise this money on their own.

Posting on her facebook page Laura said: “As yous know Lauren and Antonio have been selected to attend Space school in Houston Texas.

“This is an amazing opportunity for them and an absolute once in a life time trip.

“To pay for this trip the kids are going to be fundraising. We are looking for raffle prizes at the moment, anything that can be used in a raffle, tombola stall or auction.

“The kids will be writing to all local businesses as well as using local events to help raise the money required, all £2500 of it.

“If you can spare anything at all, we would all be so grateful, these two kids have a hard slog ahead of them, please help , thank you.”
