THERE are still problems surrounding the Clachan grass banking in Barr as the area is still overgrown.

The issue is frequently discussed at public meetings. South Ayrshire Council have said they are unable to deal with the situation due to health and safety concerns.

But it has been pointed out they are still able to cut they steep grassy slope next to the Life Boat Station in Girvan.

The council employ contractors cut the grass area in Girvan as it has high visibility. A number of options to deal with the problem have been discussed at length.

The most favourable seems to be removing the existing vegetation and replace it with Terram or another suitable weed suppressant.

There would be small trench like channels in a herring bone style then covered with 20mm of stone and low grounding bushes.

If this option does not fit within council budget another solution would be to cut it mechanically at the beginning or end of the season - about four times a year.

A petition to South Ayrshire Council via change.org to 'maintain Clachan banking' was set up by Yvonne Wilson.

It states: "As you drive up the Clachan, on the right hand side most of the way up there is grass area on a slant/banking with small trees and bushes that has not been maintained for over four years, the grass is overgrown and very untidy looking.

"It is not attractive and needs tidied up and the grass cut at least twice a year start and end of summer.

"Recently there has been a rat spotted in it that has gone into someone's garden. The residents of The Clachan have to look at this unsightly view, it is unfair as Barr is a beautiful village and this is ruining it."
