Hurricane in Honduras for Prestwick Kids
Prestwick Academy Pupils and Staff Take Part in Mock Rescue Operation
PUPILS from Prestwick Academy"s S2 have taken part in a week-long series of challenges which included a mock rescue operation as part of their Curriculum for Excellence.
It involved a series of tasks in the classroom over the first four days and culminating in an outdoor exercise as a final task where the Caledonian Playing Fields were converted into a disaster-stricken area.
An expert in such topics was drafted in to set the scene for the girls and boys, who were asked to take on the role of rapid response engineers who could help restore some of the basic elements of shelter, water and communication to the disaster zone.
They were split into groups and each given their own challenge in the shape of performing duties before returning to class - with all lessons on the day having a Hurricane at Honduras theme.
And it turned out to be a great success with both pupils and staff getting enthusiastically involved in the emergency operation that even had staff from the modern language department teaching Spanish phrases to help the rescue task-force in their work.
For shelter, and with the help of art teachers, a structure was made using recycled material while chemistry staff made sure the water supply was purified for the "victims".
