TODAY is World Bee Day and with the much-loved insects in decline, it is more important than ever to save these vital pollinators.
The purpose of the international event is to raise awareness about the importance of bees and beekeeping for food security, sustainable agriculture and environment.
But with the destruction of their habitats, combined with intensive agriculture and use of harmful pesticides, bee numbers are under serious threat.
According to the Scottish Wildlife Trust there are numerous ways to help bees. These can be found here.
You can also get involved in local projects to support bumblebees. The Scottish Wildlife Trust's Irvine to Girvan Nectar Network is one such project and it aims to establish connected nectar and pollen-rich sites along the Ayrshire coast, ensuring the long-term survival of pollinating insects in the area.
