CHURCHES across South Ayrshire have been encouraged to ring their bells to show solidarity with Notre Dame.

The Church of Scotland appealed for every church and cathedral in Scotland to take part in the tribute at 7pm this evening for seven minutes.

Troon Old Parish church have said they will ring theirs as "loudly as it clanks".

Rev David Trentic-hyres told the Troon Times: "My heart was breaking as I saw footage of the fire at Notre-Dam.

"I have been there before and its just such an amazing place.  "Its really encouraging to see the support that has been shown for it.

Rt Rev Susan Brown, Moderator of the General Assembly, made the plea after the devastating fire in the French capital on Monday night.Churches in Troon, Prestwick and Ayr could be set to take part in the spectacle.

Mrs Brown said: “The world has been shocked and saddened by the devastating fire at Notre Dame Cathedral.

"The reaction is so great because the Church is more than 'just' a building.“Many buildings, as well as being worship spaces, are a celebration of the gifts of stone masons, carpenters, glass makers, artists and musicians.

“In sympathy and solidarity with the people of Paris, I would encourage our churches and cathedrals, where possible, to ring their bells at 7pm on Thursday for seven minutes.”
