A MAN has been jailed for arming himself with a knife in Ayr town centre.

Halim Noor of Woodlands Crescent claimed he was carrying the offensive weapon as he was a chef and it was part of his collection when police stopped a car he was a passenger in on August 23 last year.

Depute Fiscal Ed Sheeran told Ayr Sheriff Court that an unmarked police vehicle saw the 28-year-old get into a car and it was later stopped at Newbridge Street and Sandgate.

Solicitor Tony Currie told the court: β€œHe is very concerned at the possibility of prison. He is petrified of being taken away from his young family.”

Sheriff Desmond Leslie wanted to recall the case after court was stopped for lunch where Noor nipped outside, but that was to be the last time he walked free as Sheriff Leslie sentenced him to a year in prison on his return.
