FIREFIGHTERS have been tackling a massive forest fire in Dalmellington for more than 15 hours.

The huge blaze broke out last night near Loch Doon and fire crews and other emergency services have been trying to control the flames since 6.50pm last night (Saturday, April 13).

Residents living nearby have been warned to keep their windows closed and steer clear of the blaze.

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "Emergency Services continue to deal with a large wildfire in the area of Loch Doon, near Dalmellington. Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area as officers from SFR work to contain the fire.

"Due to smoke in the area we are advising nearby residents to close their windows. Crews will remain in attendance until the area is made safe."

Councillor Elena Whitham shared a picture of Loch Doon before the fire, saying: "This is how beautiful Loch Doon is. A treasure & appreciated by everyone who visits. Have wild camped there many times over the years. Hoping crews are safe and fire brought under control quickly."

A Police Scotland spokesperson also advised the public to stay away from the area, saying: "Emergency Services continue to deal with a large wildfire in the area of Loch Doon, near Dalmellington. Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area as officers from SFR work to contain the fire."

The blaze comes after SFRS chiefs warned on Friday, April 12, of increased risk of wildfire in the area.
