STEVEN GERRARD is keen to strike a deal with American midfielder Matt Polster as he shapes his Rangers squad for the second half of the season.

Polster was given a chance to impress on trial last month and then joined the Light Blues at their training camp in Tenerife during the winter break.

Now the 25-year-old has been offered terms to sign up at Ibrox following his departure from Major League Soccer outfit Chicago Fire.

Gerrard said: “We’re in talks with his agent. We haven’t got it over the line just yet.

“But we’ve told his advisers that we’d like him to come. If we do it, it would be a long-term deal.

“I know him well from the MLS. He’s a player who I can play in numerous positions.

“He’s a good professional, he’s in good shape, and I think he’s got the potential to be a first-team player here at Rangers if the financials work.

“He’s one that could be an interesting one for the future.”

The capture of Polster could allow midfield counterpart Jordan Rossiter to go out on loan and play regular football in the coming months.

The former Liverpool kid saw his first two seasons at Ibrox wrecked by injury and he has made just five appearances this term.

Gerrard said: “There’s a chance Jordan might go out. That would depend on who comes in.

“We need to try and find Jordan the right place where he can get games of football.

“He’s desperate to start. He wants to be a regular in the team.

“I can’t promise him that right now because of the form of the other midfielders and the options I’ve got.

“I’ve had a chat with Jordan and told him my options are to be selfish and keep him here as a squad player. But I don’t think that’s what he needs at this stage in his career.”

One player that won’t be heading for the Ibrox exit door this month is defender Joe Worrall after it was confirmed he will remain on loan from Nottingham Forrest until the end of the season.

The Englishman turned in arguably his best performance for the Gers against Celtic and won’t be returning to the City Ground to work with new boss Martin O’Neill.

Gerrard said: “I think he has had a tough, tough time being accepted by the crowd maybe due to comments which were taken out of context from one of his first interviews.

“He was trying to be respectful to the club that owns him and at the same time trying to impress the Rangers fans. Joe is a baby, he is a great kid who has done exceptionally well.

“He is someone who will give whatever he can for our supporters and I think he has been growing and growing. I am delighted to have him and really, really happy we've got him until the end of the season. It would have been a problem for us if Forest had called him back.”
