Natalie's former school Prestwick Academy paid tribute too and said: "As a school community we are very saddened to hear of the death at the weekend of our ex-pupil Natalie Merry. Our thoughts and condolences are with those who knew and loved her."

An investigation was launched following the fire which saw two others rushed to Ayr hospital for treatment.

James Scott, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Local Senior Officer for South Ayrshire, said: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 8.22pm on Sunday, January 6 to reports of a fire within a two storey dwelling on York Street, Ayr.

"Operations Control immediately mobilised a number of fire engines and firefighters extinguished the fire.

"Sadly, one woman passed away at the scene.

"Our thought are with all of those who are affected at this time."
