Police have confirmed a serious assault took place on Main Road this morning and a man has been taken to hospital. His condition is not yet known.

The road has been cordoned off all morning and reports have suggested there was a stabbing.

A police spokeswoman said: "At around 5.25am this morning, police received a report of a serious assault in Main Road, Ayr. Emergency services attended and one man has been taken to hospital.

"Officers are still at the scene conducting inquries to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident."

A row of shops are still taped off while police attend to the ongoing incident.

A local who stays round the corner from the row of shops said he was diverted on his way to work this morning and heard there was "another stabbing" and "forensics were attending".

Stagecoach West Scotland have advised travellers that services will be disrupted due to this. They said: "Due to an ongoing police incident on Main Road, Whitletts at the shops all services will divert via Dalmilling Road this will be the case for most of the day updates to follow as we get more information."
