AYR hosted an event recently which set out to educate locals on dementia and how to support relatives living with the condition.

Over 70 people attended to learn about services that can be provided to care for people closer to their homes or in a homely setting. Some of the main themes included: promoting preventative activity; ensuring people with dementia get access to appropriate and timely interventions; addressing environmental issues; and protecting people from harm.

Tim Eltringham, Director for South Ayrshire Health and Social Care, welcomed representatives from partner and third sector organisations along with members of the public. He said: “I was impressed with the commitment of our Community Planning partners from the Council, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue and of wider organisations like The Gaiety and Ayr United Football Academy in supporting people with dementia.

“Today also highlighted the significant work our local communities are undertaking with the growing amounts of ‘dementia friendly community’ work in Prestwick, Troon, Girvan and elsewhere.”
